Travel to Australia: three-week itinerary

Day 1 of the Australia trip: Melbourne

After about a 23-hour flight, I landed in Melbourne. To be honest, the approach to Australia was not the easiest: in customs, the policeman had not exactly liked my passport because the photo was slightly ruined.

After about an hour in which they asked me all the details of my trip and, most importantly, whether I was able to support myself financially, they let me enter the land Down Under. Once I arrived in downtown Melbourne, I met with Martino, one of my closest friends who still lives in Australia.

ย

Day 2 of the Australia trip: Alice Springs

After a couple of beers, it was time for an immediate departure at dawn, with a flight bound for Alice Springs. As soon as I arrived, I biked 50 km to Simpson Gap, a peculiar rock formation.

The ride to Simpson Gap is more or less flat, so I got my first pleasant taste of the Australian outback, with its ochre/orange hues.

Day 3-5 of the Australia trip: Uluru

On a three-day tour, which was very well organized, I visited Uluru.

We saw the different colors of the mythical rock (both at sunrise and sunset) and walked near the mythical rock, covering the full loop about 7 km long.

Later we visited Kings Canyon, again on foot: simply stunning!

The tour did not include any accommodations for the night-we only had a mattress and a sleeping bag, and honestly it was wonderful to sleep under billions of stars.

ย

Day 6-9 of the Australia trip: Sydney

After the tour I spent a second night in Alice Springs. Thus it was time for the second domestic flight, this time heading for Sydney. Here I met up with other Italian friends who lived there: together with them I celebrated my birthday. In these three/four days I visited the CBD, Bondi beach walking to Bronte, Manly and Watson Bay.

Sydney in general I liked it very much!

ย

Day 10-12 of the Australia trip: Cairns

From Sydney I flew back to Cairns. The first thing I did in Cairns was to take a tandem parachute jump-the view from 4,000 meters is amazing!

On the second day, I participated in an organized tour that included several snorkels in the reef area-this is one of the highlights of a trip to Australia!

The Tableland Mountains daytour, on the other hand, did not convince me: too many hours in the bus and not enough points to miss for anything in the world.

ย

Day 13-16 of the Australia trip: Whitsunday Islands

From Carins I took a flight to Airle Beach. The town, which is definitely far from interesting, is the base for a visit to Whitsunday Island. The two nights sailing to this paradise were definitely fantastic and the viewpoint just above Whitsunday beach is unforgettable. This small boat cruise requires booking well in advance and was quite expensive back in 2013: about $500 for three days.

ย

Day 17 of the Australia trip: transfer to Adelaide

A typical day on my trip to Australia: transfer with two flights to Adelaide.

ย

Day 18 of the Australia trip: Kangaroo Island

In Adelaide I was reunited with good friend Caute and together we took the daytrip to Kangaroo Island. The island is really beautiful: there is no shortage of encounters with kangaroos, sea lions and koalas. The downside of this daytrip is that the journey is really long: we leave before dawn and return to Adelaide late at night.

This island is definitely a gem and definitely deserves more than a single day’s visit.

ย

Day 19-21 of the Australia trip: Grampians and Great Ocean Road

After taking a flight to Melbourne, Caute and I rented a car to visit the Grampians. Once we arrived in this beautiful natural area, we walked to the Pinnacles, which offer spectacular views.

From the Grampians we headed south to beautiful Port Fairy, where we stopped for the night. The Australia trip continued with the Great Ocean Road, which offers breathtaking viewpoints, especially the Twelve Apostoles!

The Great Ocean Road leads practically all the way to Melbourne, where we returned to Martino’s house.

ย

Day 22 of the Australia trip: Wilson Prom

The last daytour, again by car, took us to Wilson Prom, which turned out to be one of the most beautiful spots I have visited in Australia. Getting to Wilson Prom from Melbourne takes about three hours by car, but we were rewarded with a wonderful hike along the ocean. In particular, with a short walk of about an hour and a half, it is possible to view the ocean from a beautiful vantage point.

ย

Day 23 of the Australia trip: St. Kilda

After a leisurely walk around Melbourne we spent an evening drinking liters of beer in St. Kilda. Thanks to Kaori, Martino’s girlfriend, for the company! This was the last day of my trip to Australia.

Budget di un viaggio in Australia

Definitely an expensive trip, in all respects. From the flight (found with a good offer, about 750 euros), to the excursions, food and hostels: everything definitely expensive!

LUOGHI DA NON PERDERE IN AUSTRALIA

My podium of what to see on a trip toAustralia is Whitsunday Island, Uluru and Wilson Prom

Viaggio in Australia: Quando & quanto

It is recommended to go to Australia in our winter to fully enjoy the warm southern state. If I went back to Australia someday, I would return to visit the western part, which is supposed to be wilder and perhaps more welcoming.

COSA METTERE IN VALIGIA

Temperatures are decidedly mild even in November, with a sweatshirt left mostly unused.

ย

ย

ย

ย

ย
